What's on your skin?

According to a recent study, the average woman applies 515 chemicals to her face a day. Many of these chemicals may be harmful and the EWG warns that some harmful ingredients may cause hormonal disruption and even immune dysfunction.

Did you know?

What BIOselect is doing...

1) Less than 1% of all cosmetic products are made from ingredients that have undergone safety assessments.

2) The FDA does NOT review cosmetic ingredients for their safety before they come to market, nor does it have the authority to recall hazardous products.

3) The European Union (EU) recently passed a law banning the use of suspected CMRs (carcinogens, mutagens or reproductive toxins) in any cosmetics sold in the 25-member EU.  The major US cosmetics companies that sell abroad have had to reformulate their products to conform to EU safety guidelines, but most have NOT changed the formulas they sell here in the US!

The BIOselect products belong in the 1% category! Our formulas pass through rigorous safety assessments and our products are certified by AIAB-ICEA based on the European standards.  (read more about our certification here

All BIOselect products are made in Europe. We do NOT use different or inferior formulas for the US.
You can be assured that our products are:
- Harsh-preservatives FREE
- Harsh-surfactants FREE
- Harsh-chemicals FREE
- Mineral oils FREE
- Not tested on animals
(read more about our standards here

What to do?

1) Good habits start young.
90% of 14-year-old girls use make up today and 60% of girls as young as 7 are now using lipstick, eyeliner, eye shadow and mascara.

--> Make sure to teach your children to look at product labels and avoid products with certain harmful ingredients.  Take them with you in the beauty aisle and show them!

2) Read the labels and use certified products when possible.
Credible certifying organizations ensure that cosmetic products are as healthy and safe as possible.  Look for the stamp of certification by organizations like ICEA, BDIH or ECOCERT.  Also, remember that the USDA only certifies single ingredients (of agricultural nature).  Just because a product bares that USDA seal does NOT mean that it does not contain any harmful chemicals.

Thank you to everyone for coming! The response was so overwhelmingly positive that we are already planning our next Spa Day.

Got Glow?

Wednesday, December 2, 2009 9:09:59 PM EST

Our everyday guarantee: FREE shipping on all orders $50+

Got Glow?

“When I look in the mirror I see…”

Go on. Finish the sentence. I’ll wait.

If your answer had anything to do with puffy eyes, tired eyes, wrinkles, pimples, or blotches – you are definitely not alone. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. What you are missing is “glow”.

Food is the root to our glowing skin. The foods we eat nourish the cells in our body, which affect the quality of the blood that feeds our delicate skin cells. If we feed our body cells foods that are processed, fatty, or contain animal products, then that is what will create our skin’s surface. However, if our skin cells grow from vegetables and other energizing, purifying and reviving foods, then our skin will illuminate.

Our skin is the product of what  goes on inside our bodies. When our organs function properly and efficiently, our skin will be as calm and relaxed as our insides.

Foods that deprive us of our glow

Foods that enhance our glow
Red Meat & Poultry
These foods are high in saturated fats and cholesterol. Our bodies require a lot of energy to digest red meat, which takes away energy and resources from other bodily functions. Red meat contributes to dry skin and hair.
Po
ultry has a layer of fat under the skin, which gives its consumers a layer of fat under their skin. This contributes to dry skin and blemishes. “Chicken skin” is a common term for aging flesh on humans for a reason.

Dairy
We are the only species that consumes milk after infancy. The majority of humans naturally stop producing lactase, the enzyme needed to properly metabolize lactose (the sugar in milk), usually between the ages of two and five years old. Most mammals were not meant to consume milk after infancy. These foods also require a lot of energy to assimilate, which limits the amount of energy available for other body functions.

Eggs
Eggs are also difficult for our bodies to digest, which again depletes energy and resources from other body systems. They are high in cholesterol and fat and create stiff muscles and joints.

Sugar & Flour
These foods do not provide us with any nutrients. Refined sugar lacks vitamins, minerals and fiber, thus requiring extra effort to digest. Our body must deplete its own store of minerals and enzymes to absorb sucrose properly. Therefore, instead of providing our body with nutrition, it creates deficiency. Unlike natural sugar, refined sugar is absorbed quickly into our bloodstream causing excitability, nervous tension and hyperactivity. We quickly “crash” when our blood sugar plummets, causing fatigue, depression, weariness and exhaustion. All of these fatty foods harden the body. They contribute to clogged pores and inhibit waste release. They decrease moisture in the skin, which contributes to wrinkles and makes skin hard and brittle.

All of these fatty foods harden the body. They contribute to clogged pores and inhibit waste release. They decrease moisture in the skin, which contributes to wrinkles and makes skin hard and brittle.
  Whole Grains
So what exactly is a whole-grain? These are grains that have been produced from unrefined grain, which is grain that still retains its outer bran layers and inner germ and endosperm. Basically, these grains still have all of their nutrients (dietary fiber, minerals and vitamins). These grains are absorbed slowly into your blood stream, keeping your blood sugar level stable, which keeps your energy and mood free from spikes and crashes.

Beans
They are high in iron, B vitamins, fiber, and are versatile enough that you may never get tired of them.

Fish
When eaten in moderation, fish provides an excellent source of the essential fatty acids, protein, B vitamins and other essential nutrients. vitamins

Vegetables
Dark leafy greens like kale and collards are great for purifying the blood, improving liver, gallbladder and kidney function. Nightshade vegetables are better in smaller amounts due to their acidic content. These vegetables include tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant.

Soups
When served as the first course of a meal, or the entire meal, soup helps to relax the digestive tract, which enhances our digestion, making the nutrients more efficiently and easily absorbed.

Dessert
That’s right, dessert is an important component of a healthy diet. Depriving yourself of foods that you crave is not going to do anyone any good. This is why fad and crash dieting never works in the long run. The key is picking the right dessert to prevent overeating and binging and keeping you feeling satisfied. Fruit is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth. Avoid desserts made with refined flour and sugar. Substitute your favorite dessert recipe with a whole-grain or nut-based flour and replace refined sugar with a natural sweetener like agave nectar. Check out some dessert recipes at peninabareket.com. Also, sweet vegetables soothe the internal organs of the body and energize the mind. Because many of these vegetables are root vegetables, they are energetically grounding, which helps to balance out the spaciness people often feel after eating other kinds of sweet foods. Adding in sweet vegetables helps to crowd out less healthy foods in the diet.

These “glowing” foods are nutrient dense, so every calorie consumed is actually benefiting your body. By eating a plant-based diet that emphasizes vegetables, whole-grains and legumes, you give your body the fuel it needs to function without extra effort to remove all of the impurities you feed it.

5 tips on how to fight dry skin in the winter

Monday, October 26, 2009 11:50:47 AM EDT

The winter is coming and your skin may be dreading it.  Low temperatures and dry air rob your skin of its moisture leaving you with flaky, itchy skin. Here are some tips on how to keep your skin looking great during the winter:

Turn down the temperature in the shower
Hot water washes your skin’s natural oils away and leaves you with dry skin even after a shower. If you can’t bear to turn down the temperature then keep your showers short during the winter. (tip: if the water makes your skin red, then it’s too hot)

Moisturize the 5 key spots
Your face, hands, feet, elbows and lips are the most vulnerable areas on your body and it comes to drying out. Invest in a good hand cream that you can keep in your purse to use after washing your hands. Also, don’t forget about your lips that tend to chap during the winter. Your face and hands are the most exposed areas to the cold so treat them well!

Use the right soap
Make sure your soap contains glycerin. Good quality soaps contain glycerin that is a great natural moisturizer. You will notice a big difference with olive oil soap, known for leaving your skin well hydrated and healthy looking. (All BIOselect soaps contain glycerin)

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate
You can moisturize all you want but unless you exfoliate you are not doing it well. Try to use a good face and body scrub every couple of weeks. By removing dead skin cells, you allow your moisturizer to better penetrate and hydrate your skin.

Hydrate & eat well
It’s true that you are what you eat. Make sure to drink the appropriate amount of water every day. Also, by eating healthy foods like fruit and veg
etables will help your skin get the nutrients it needs to look its best. You may also want to consider taking fish oil supplements as it has been suggested that omega-3 fish oil pills may help drying skin.

Free re-usable water bottle with your next purchase

Saturday, October 3, 2009 11:52:32 AM EDT

Did you know that...

  • Americans use an estimated 28 billion plastic water bottles every year

  • Approximately 1.5 million barrels of oil --enough to run 100,000 cars for a whole year --are used to make plastic water bottles, while transporting these bottles burns even more oil

  • Only 24% of plastic bottles are recycled into other products. The rest 76% end up in landfills or the ocean, where it can take hundreds of years to decompose. Meanwhile, the plastic bottles are producing a toxic chemical called phthalate that is absorbed by the soil

  • One gallon of bottled water costs the same as 10,000 gallons of tap water (when you account for the production process)

  • Recycling a single plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60-watt ligt bulb for 6 hours

  • Two gallons of water are used in the purification process for every gallon that goes into bottles

  • And if you thought bottled water is safer...

  • Tap water is actually held to more stringent quality standards than bottled water, and some brands of bottled water are just tap water in disguise

  • Join the effort and use re-usable water bottle! BIOselect is offering you a FREE re-usable water bottle with your next purchase. Take it with you to work, the gym, in the car or the airplane. You can refill it at any water fountain and it won't cost you a dime :)

Sep09 Ingredient of the Month - Dictamo

    Tuesday, September 22, 2009 8:48:42 PM EDT

This month's favorite ingredient is Dictamo.

Properties: Skin protectant, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, soothing

Cool story behind it: Dictamo, also known as Dittany of Crete, is an herb that only grows on the mountains of Crete, the biggest island in Greece. Dictamo, despite being so rare, has been used for thousands of years by the Greeks as a pancea for many ailments. Traditionally, Dictamo has been used as an antiseptic disinfectant for healing wounds, chewed to heal mouth and throat ailments and drunk as a tea by the Cretans, who are famous for their long life giving diet.

DICTAMO'S HISTORY: It is believed that the Minoans knew the benefits of Dittany and used it for curing ailments and for beautifying their skin and hair. Ancient Greek scholars Hippocrates, Aristotle and Theophrastus all extolled the virtues of the 'miracle cure' plant in various ancient writings. Later in the Roman Era poets, writers and philosophers such as Virgil, Cicero and Pliny the elder all commented on the benefits of Dittany. In ancient Greece it is believed that Hippocrates prescribed plant cures to aid all manner of ailments and considered Dittany of Crete useful for stomach aches and complaints of the digestive system and as a poultice for healing wounds. Later still, during the Classical Renaissance period, European scholars, herbalists and botanists such as Gerald, Dapper and Culpepper renewed interest into the efficacy of Dittany.

ITS NAME & TRADITION: Dictamo is also called "Erontas" by the Greeks, meaning Love. It earned its name due to how difficult it is to be picked from the wild. Dictamo only grows in the most treacherous parts of the mountains of Crete and tradition has it that young girls would dare their lovers to go pick the plant if they loved them enough. The boys were called "Erondades", meaning Love Seekers.

IN HOLLYWOOD: In the fantasy novel Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince, dittany is the name of a substance which when used magically, can prevent scarring if applied quickly after a cutting injury.

DICTAMELIA: Dictamelia is the infusion of the plant Dictamo into Olive Oil. This extract makes an ointment used by the Greeks to help with healing after burns or cuts on the skin. BIOselect holds a patent on Dictamelia and is the only one in the world to be able to claim its properties in skin care products.

Products with Dictamo: All BIOselect products contain Dictamo/Dictamelia.

    Disclaimers:
Make sure to always check what the ingredients are in the skin care products you use. We keep an up-to-date scientific library of our ingredients and their properties so that you can educate yourself! Feel free to browse our Beauty Library.

Natural remedy for cracked hands & gift for new moms!

    Saturday, August 29, 2009 7:29:19 PM EDT

The winter season is coming and if you have dry skin you always feel it—I know I always do. The cold can cause your skin to dehydrate, especially exposed parts of your body like your hands. We hear this a lot from our customers who complain about cracked skin on their hands. A natural remedy to dry hands has always been olive oil-a great natural moisturizer.

You can use the BIOselect Olive Hand Creams which were designed for that reason exactly-keep your hands moisturized without leaving a greasy residue afterwards. The Light Texture Hand Cream is for regular skin that may occasionally dry out. The BIOselect Olive Hand Creams won’t wash away when you wash your hands so you don’t need to keep re-applying them. But what you might not know is that many of our customers do manual labor (like construction and mail delivery) and love our Hand Creams. The advantage is that the BIOselect Olive Hand Creams have very neutral scents, so I always tell our male customers that they don’t have to smell like roses in order to keep their hands moisturized!

    "New Mom" gift:
Because new moms wash their hands a lot between diaper changes, baby baths and washing bottles, the BIOselect hand creams make a perfect gift. Combine one of the Hand Creams with our Did you know that you can purchase the "New Mom" gift on our website and we can send it directly to your friend's address?

*Does not include shipping & handling.
<$25 includes one hand cream and one baby soap
Products do not come wrapped or in/with gift bags.

The majority of green products make false claims

    Saturday, April 18, 2009 7:42:56 PM EDT

According to Reuters, a study conducted by TerraChoice Environmental Marketing indicated that only 2% of the 2,220+ “green” products examined in the US and Canadian markets make completely legitimate claims on their labels. This trend has increased in the past couple of years when the North American consumer like you and me have become more demanding for “green” products. Unfortunately many producers are taking advantage of this growing demand and by making false or misleading claims they make consumers perceive their products as “green” when they truly are not.

This is a very serious issue, especially in less-regulated markets in the US, such as skin care. In Europe, there are many certifying organizations which test and ensure that cosmetic products are truly 100% organic. The biggest and most well-known are ICEA, BDIH and ECOCERT. Europeans know very well that unless a cosmetic product is certified by a reputable organization like the aforementioned, the product’s “greenness” is questionable. Such organizations ensure that raw ingredients used are organic and non-toxic to humans (ie no Parabens, SLS etc). They also make sure that the product itself does not harm the environment by only allowing recyclable, non-toxic packaging. In the US, there is no such standard. The USDA only controls agricultural material, such as plants, but it cannot certify a whole cosmetic product as organic. Next time you see a product with an organic stamp on it, look closer and it will probably say “Organic Ingredient” or something to that extent. This only ensures that only one or a few ingredients in the self-proclaimed “green” product are organic, NOT the whole product. The product may still contain harmful ingredients such as Parabens and SLS.

It is very important that you educate yourself about what to look for in cosmetic products. BIOselect, for example, is certified by ICEA. You will notice that each of our products has an ICEA stamp on it. You can refer to our website anytime to update yourself on ICEA’s standards. We are very honored to be in the 2% part of the products that have scientific and credible support behind our claims.

So next time you see an organic label on a cosmetic product, ask about it and research it. Know what you are putting on your skin because it is your largest organ after all.

To find the original article from Reuters please click here.

If you have ANY questions about the BIOselect products and our organic certification please feel free to contact Leo (PhD in Chemistry) or check out our website.

    Anti-aging Expo

    Tuesday, March 31, 2009 9:28:46 PM EDT

I would like to thank everyone for coming to see us at the Charlotte Anti-Aging Expo on Saturday. Even though that was the first year that the show was taking place, we saw a lot of interested people in our products. It was very apparent that a show like this was needed in Charlotte.

I would like to thank Andrea Losik, who helped us with selecting our booth and promotional material for the show and Sally, the show organizer! I am really looking forward to next year's show.

During the expo we had the chance to meet Chef Lou Petrozza (from Hell's Kitchen), who came by our booth and picked up some of our Terra Creta Olive Oil to cook with. He made a lot of tasty and unique treats, with my favorite being the caramel brie cheese with berries! mmmm... heaven on earth! You can see pictures in our gallery.

We are going to have a booth at the Natural Triad Health & Wellness Show in Greensboro, NC this weekend. Come in and see us to get free samples & great deals on our products! Entrance is FREE.

Feb09 Ingredient of the Month - Aloe Vera

    Monday, February 2, 2009 6:46:35 PM EST

This month's favorite ingredient is Aloe Vera ('The Silent Healer').

    What it is: Moisturizer

Cool story behind it: When Alexander the Great went on his quest to conquer the world, it was well-known that Aloe Vera was a great plant to use to help heal the skin. When Alexander the Great’s soldiers got injured during fights, they would apply Aloe Vera on their wounds afterward, which helped them heal faster and prevented them from getting infections. But it was not easy for Alexander the Great to find such vast supplies of Aloe Vera while traveling through so many different places. So it is believed that his army’s need of Aloe Vera pushed Alexander the Great to conquer the island of Socotra (at the horn of Africa) which at the time was the center of Aloe Vera cultivation. Thus, to ensure continuous supply of Aloe Vera, Alexander the Great had to take over the island of Socotra. Aloe Vera is probably one of the most well-known plants throughout the world for its moisturizing and soothing capabilities; in many cultures it is called the “Silent Healer”. There are records of the plant being used in Persia and India as early as 1,000 BC. Aloe Vera is used to treat various skin conditions such as cuts, burns, and eczema. Sap of Aloe Vera also eases pain and reduces inflammation.

Jan09 Ingredient of the Month - Squalene

    Saturday, January 10, 2009 5:13:19 PM EST

While making this new website I learned a lot of cool things, especially about the ingredients that our products contain. Leo has explained the roles of a few of the ingredients of the BIOselect products in simple words. Leo is a chemist and he has done a lot of research on this.

So I decided to bring you my favorite ingredient every month in simple, not-so-confusing scientific words. Check in every month because some of our ingredients have really cool stories!

This month's favorite ingredient is Squalene.

    What it is: Emollient/Moisturizer

Cool story behind it: Our skin naturally produces oil, which makes up approximately 12% of a young person's skin. Once we start aging past 20 years old (yes I know I thought this was young too but it’s a fact) our skin's ability to produce its natural oil diminishes. Thus, we have to replenish this oil through moisturizers. Some of the most commonly used emollients used in branded skin care products include Petrochemicals (if that does not sound nasty to you, I don't know what does). Petrochemicals are the best friends of a lot of skin care producers because they are so cheap (yep, even when gas is at $4/gal). Unfortunately, petrochemicals are not good for the skin. They cause our skin pores to clog, leading to break outs.
Squalene is a natural alternative to petrochemicals. It has great moisturizing properties and it is the closest natural ingredient to our skin oil's make up. This means that by using Squalene, you naturally replace your skin's oil to keep it looking young and fresh (and pimple-free). The BIOselect products use plant-based Squalene, which mainly comes from olives.

Make sure to always check what the ingredients are in the skin care products you use. We keep an up-to-date scientific library of our ingredients and their properties so that you can educate yourself! Feel free to browse our Beauty Library .

For more information about Squalene click here .

These claims are for general-knowledge purposes only. They are not medical claims.

Products with Squalene: Anti-wrinkle eye cream, Hydrating day cream, Hydroprotective day cream, Nutritional night cream, Anticellulite slimming cream.
