This month's favorite ingredient is Aloe Vera ('The Silent Healer').
What it is: Moisturizer
Cool story behind it: When Alexander the Great went on his quest to conquer the world, it was well-known that Aloe Vera was a great plant to use to help heal the skin. When Alexander the Great’s soldiers got injured during fights, they would apply Aloe Vera on their wounds afterward, which helped them heal faster and prevented them from getting infections. But it was not easy for Alexander the Great to find such vast supplies of Aloe Vera while traveling through so many different places. So it is believed that his army’s need of Aloe Vera pushed Alexander the Great to conquer the island of Socotra (at the horn of Africa) which at the time was the center of Aloe Vera cultivation. Thus, to ensure continuous supply of Aloe Vera, Alexander the Great had to take over the island of Socotra. Aloe Vera is probably one of the most well-known plants throughout the world for its moisturizing and soothing capabilities; in many cultures it is called the “Silent Healerâ€. There are records of the plant being used in Persia and India as early as 1,000 BC. Aloe Vera is used to treat various skin conditions such as cuts, burns, and eczema. Sap of Aloe Vera also eases pain and reduces inflammation.
